GCSE results reach Stafford students on Thursday 20 August, and for most of them the same morning decides where they go in September. Schools open early, Stafford College enrols on the day, and the window to challenge a grade closes five weeks later, on 24 September.
Where and when
Sir Graham Balfour School has set GCSE result collection for Thursday 20 August between 8.30am and 11.30am. (Sir Graham Balfour School calendar) Other Stafford and Stone schools set their own collection times and send them to families directly, so check the letter or email from your school rather than assuming a common time.
Students who sat GCSE maths or English at Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group collect from the Library in the Riverbank Building at Stafford College from 8.30am, and from room IC205 between 10am and 1.30pm. Enrolling at Stafford College on the day
Anyone holding an offer should have had a letter through the post with an allocated time slot. For A levels and A+ programmes the college asks students to come only at the allocated time; for vocational and T Level courses the slot is flexible and students can come in at any point during the day. Bring every exam results slip and certificate from Years 10 and 11, and a pen. A levels students enrol on three of the four subjects they were interviewed for, and any subject change should be raised before results day.

On grades that miss the mark, the college’s position is that students should still turn up: “If you do not achieve the exam results you were hoping for, it is important you still attend or contact us and we will help you to enrol on to another suitable course.” It also says places remain on a range of 2026/27 courses across the Newcastle, Stafford and Leek campuses. Induction week begins the week of Monday 31 August, with teaching starting on Monday 7 September.
If a grade looks wrong
Three things about challenging a GCSE grade catch families out every year, and all three are in the JCQ rules for summer 2026.
The first is the deadline. The priority review of marking, the fast 15-day service, does not cover GCSEs at all: it is for GCE AS and A level and Level 3 vocational technical qualifications. For a GCSE the routes are a clerical re-check of the mark totals, or a review of marking, and both close on 24 September. (JCQ, post-results services, summer 2026)
The second is who asks. For a school’s own candidates, awarding bodies “will only accept requests for reviews of marking from centres and not from candidates or their parents”, so the request has to go through the school’s exams officer. Private candidates are encouraged to go through a centre but may apply to the awarding body direct.
The third is the risk. There is no grade protection. In JCQ’s words, “where there has been a reduction in marks or a downgrade following a review of marking, the request cannot be revoked and the original mark or grade will not be reinstated”. A grade can go down as well as up, which is why schools usually ask to see the script first. Copies of GCSE scripts can be requested from 20 August, with the deadline for teaching and learning copies also 24 September.

What it means for you
Three dates are worth putting in a phone. Thursday 20 August is results and enrolment day and the day GCSE script copies can first be requested. The week of Monday 31 August is induction at Stafford College. Monday 7 September is when teaching starts, and it is also the day bus pass and travel information becomes available from the Library Helpdesk in the Riverbank Building.
The one that slips past people is 24 September. It is a working deadline for the school, not the student, so if a grade looks wrong the conversation with the exams officer needs to happen in the first week or two of September, not in the last week of the month.
