Stafford to London Train: 1hr 16, None Before 9am Sunday

Stafford sits on the West Coast Main Line, which is the reason people commute from here at all. The fastest train to London Euston takes 1 hour 16 minutes, and there are usually three or four departures an hour. What varies enormously is the price, and it depends less on when you travel than on which company’s trains your ticket lets you board.

Stafford to London train: first, last and how many a day

These are London Northwestern Railway’s own published figures for the Stafford to London Euston route, read from its route page on 16 September 2026. They cover both operators’ services through Stafford, not just LNR’s own.

The gap between “fastest” and “typical” is the number that matters: 37 minutes on a route that can be done in 1 hour 16. Sixty-seven trains a day sounds like turn-up-and-go, and it is, but more than half of what turns up is the slow stopper. Almost every headline figure you will see quoted for this route, including ours at the top of this page, is the 1 hour 16, and you only get that on a fast Avanti West Coast service you have the right ticket for. Pick the departure, do not pick the hour.

The trains

Checked on National Rail timetable data for Tuesday 11 August 2026. Off-peak, the pattern repeats roughly every hour.

Note the 12:24. It is an Avanti service and it takes almost an hour longer than the 12:53. Not every fast-operator train is a fast train, so check the arrival time rather than the brand on the side.

For an early start, the 06:22 gets into Euston at 07:53 and the 06:55 at 08:27, both around 1 hour 31. The 07:14 arrives 08:35 in 1 hour 21.

No Stafford to London train before 9am on a Sunday

Checked 2 September 2026 against the National Rail timetable for Sunday 6, Sunday 13 and Sunday 20 September 2026. The weekday numbers on this page do not describe a Sunday, and the difference is bigger here than on most routes.

The first Sunday departure from Stafford is the 09:00. There is nothing earlier on any of the three Sundays we sampled. On a weekday the first train is the 05:35. That is a gap of almost three and a half hours, and it rules out a Sunday morning in London for anything starting before about 11.30am.

That first train is also a slow one. The 09:00 arrives Euston at 10:59, a run of 1h 59m, against a weekday best of 1h 21m. The 09:34 takes 2h 06m and the 10:17 takes 2h 26m. The first Sunday train that gets under an hour and a half is the 12:10, at 1h 26m.

Coming home is a different story. The Sunday evening service from Euston is close to weekday speed: the 19:32 reaches Stafford in 1h 17m and the 20:31 in 1h 18m, both quicker than several weekday departures. The last useful Sunday train back is the 21:49, arriving 23:52; after that the only option is an overnight service taking six hours.

So the Sunday problem on this route is one-directional. Getting to London on a Sunday morning is genuinely slow and starts late; getting back on a Sunday evening is fine.

Sundays are not all the same, either. On Sunday 11 October the picture was worse again: nothing on that day’s timetable beat 2h 08m, and the 08:49 took 3h 54m. Check the specific date rather than assuming a standard Sunday.

Stafford to London disruption in September 2026

Checked against London Northwestern Railway’s engineering calendar on Tuesday 8 September 2026. One date matters far more than the rest on this route.

Sunday 20 September: no trains into Euston before 16:00. There is no service at all between London Euston and Watford Junction until 4pm that day, for an urgent bridge removal. It takes out Avanti West Coast’s Euston services to Birmingham New Street, Wolverhampton, Crewe, Chester, Holyhead, Manchester Piccadilly, Liverpool Lime Street, Preston, Carlisle and Glasgow Central, which is every fast Stafford to London train, and London Northwestern’s Euston to Crewe and Birmingham services with them. If you need to be in London on the morning of Sunday 20 September, this is the weekend to travel on the Saturday.

Sunday 27 September, until 11:50. Services between London Euston and Rugby or Coventry are amended, which reaches Avanti’s Euston to Wolverhampton and Manchester trains through Stafford. Departure times move; the trains still run.

Monday 21 to Thursday 24 September, the 22:50 Birmingham New Street to Northampton is amended, which is a Birmingham-end change rather than a Stafford one, but it is on the same works programme.

The operator’s own caution is worth repeating: these alterations are sometimes published before they reach the National Rail journey planner, so a plan made in the planner alone can be out of date. (London Northwestern Railway, changes to train times)

The fares, and the trap in them

All of these were live for Tuesday 11 August 2026. The important column is the third.

An off-peak return costs £53.30 on the slow train and £86.00 on the fast one. You are paying £32.70 to save 36 minutes each way. Advance singles undercut both: £18.00 was the cheapest London Northwestern advance on the day we checked, and £27.00 the cheapest Avanti advance for an off-peak departure.

If you are going into central London rather than just to Euston, the Off-Peak Day Travelcard at £55.80, again London Northwestern and West Midlands only, includes Tube and bus travel for the day and is usually better value than a return plus separate Tube fares.

Season tickets

This is where the choice gets expensive. There are four annual season tickets on the Stafford to London flow, and the cheapest and the dearest are £7,284 apart.

Weekly and monthly equivalents: the cheapest is £209.00 a week or £802.60 a month, and the unrestricted London Terminals ticket is £457.60 a week or £1,501.90 a month. Buy the restricted ticket and you are committing to the 1 hour 52 train every day. Whether that is worth £7,284 a year is the only real decision on this page.

Getting to and from the station

Stafford station is on Station Road, ST16 2AA, a short walk from the town centre, and is managed by Avanti West Coast. The ticket office opens 06:00 to 20:00 Monday to Saturday and 08:30 to 20:00 on Sunday.

It is a step-free category A station: there is step-free access to every platform, with lifts. There are toilets, accessible toilets, Changing Places facilities, baby changing, a sheltered waiting area, shops and refreshments. Staff assistance is available Monday to Saturday and from 07:30 to midnight on Sunday.

Parking: 519 spaces across two car parks, 14 of them accessible. The Avanti-run car park charges £12.50 a day, £5.50 on Saturdays and Sundays, £132 a month, £374 for three months or £1,200 a year. Weigh that against the borough’s own Doxey Road long stay car park at £4.80 a day, about ten minutes’ walk away.

Cycling: 84 cycle spaces in two bays on platform 1, plus 42 in the multi-storey.

One current note: the handrails on the station stairs are being replaced for four weeks from 23 July 2026. The lifts serve every platform, so use those if you are carrying luggage or pushing a bike.

Coming from Stone

Stone has its own station, but no direct train to London. Every journey involves a change, usually at Stafford or Stoke-on-Trent, and takes between 1 hour 49 and 2 hours 20. The 08:52 from Stone reaches Euston at 10:41; the 09:52 arrives 11:41 with an off-peak return at £94.00. The cheaper option is often the 08:06, which uses the London Northwestern-only fare of £43.20 single and £53.30 return but takes 2 hours 18.

For most Stone commuters, driving or taking the bus to Stafford and starting the journey there is faster and cheaper. It also opens up the restricted season tickets above, which are priced from Stafford.
