The Stafford Times is an independent news and information site for Stafford and its borough. We report from documents, we cite them, and we have no connection to the council or to anybody we write about.
The borough
Stafford town is the county town and much the largest place, with Stone the only other town of size. Around them are Eccleshall, Gnosall, Barlaston, Weston, Haughton and the villages spread along the Trent and the Sow. About 143,000 people live here, and the borough sits at a crossing point of main road, main line and canal, which is a fair part of why it grew where it did.
What we report
Stafford Borough Council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Trent and the Sow, and company filings in The Gazette. Roads, schools and social care are Staffordshire County Council’s, and we name the right body rather than letting the complaint go to the wrong place.
What happens in 2028
Stafford Borough Council is due to be abolished on 1 April 2028 and absorbed into a new South and Mid Staffordshire unitary authority covering six present-day districts and roughly 690,000 people. Stafford will be the largest single component of it without controlling it, so the county town’s own decisions will in future be taken alongside a much wider area. We will report the process from the published documents and keep our reference pages pointing at whichever authority actually answers.
